The 1st July 2018 marks the entry into force of the Polar Code amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

The amendments predominantly address the following three areas:

  1. Sufficient officers must be engaged on board when navigating through polar waters and the hours of work and rest must always be observed (Regulation V/4);
  2. New requirements concerning passenger ships training including familiarisation, crowd control and crisis management (Regulation V/2); and
  3. Crew on board ships subject to the IGF Code will be required to undergo familiarisation and further training as required (Regulation V/3).
