Robert Thake joined Fenech & Fenech Advocates as an Associate in 2018 and forms part of the firm’s local litigation team where he deals with numerous civil, family and commercial matters including separation agreements, lease and sale agreements, contracts of work, and claims for damages.
After securing his Bachelor of Laws degree, Robert qualified as a lawyer with a Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Malta after successfully defending his dissertation ‘A comparative analysis and examination of Act XIV of 2011 on divorce.’ He proceeded to obtain a master’s degree from the University of Malta and once again successfully defended his dissertation entitled ‘Protecting the financially vulnerable spouse in matrimonial proceedings.’
Robert’s practice focuses on family law, particularly on the financial aspect of matrimonial breakdown and the often-complicated interplay between companies and the family. Robert is an experienced litigator in the field, accustomed to handling complex matrimonial issues and has on various occasions been appointed by the Court as a legal referee in family proceedings. Throughout his practice he has advised numerous clients, both locally and abroad, including high net worth individuals, on the manner in which to safeguard their assets following the breakdown of their marriage. Apart from dealing with cases of separation and divorce, Robert has also successfully dealt with other equally sensitive issues such as care and custody disputes, international child abduction, paternity suits, and domestic violence.
Robert is an examiner and casual visiting lecturer within the Civil Law Department of the University of Malta where he lectures Law of Persons and Family Law. He also participates in a number of civic and voluntary initiatives including the setting up of a law clinic in collaboration with the University of Malta and is also the Academic Officer of the Chamber of Advocates, Malta.
Beyond his practice, Robert is a respected antiquarian book collector, and a member of the Bibliographical Society of London and the prestigious Grolier Club of New York. He is also the author of two books: A Publishing History of a Prohibited Best-Seller (2016) and Patriotism, Deception and Censorship (2013).
