Tax Partner Rosanne Bonnici was invited to sit on a FinTech panel at the Institute of Financial Services Practitioners’ Annual Conference organised on 25 February 2019 with the theme “Striking a Balance for Financial Services – regulation and competitiveness”. Dr. Bonnici shared her views with the Institute’s members and stakeholders present on the tax rules currently in force for DLT assets as well as the rules as applicable to security tokens. A tax lawyer for the past 25 years, Dr. Bonnici shared her views on status of the tax regime applicable to these sectors, expressing her views, amongst other things, on various points requiring clarification in the three sets of Tax Guidelines recently published by the Revenue, as well as to changes to the Companies Act and said Guidelines to support Malta’s foray into STOs going forward.
