Managing Partner of Fenech and Fenech Advocates, Ann Fenech in her capacity as President of the Malta Maritime Law Association and Executive Council member of the Comite Maritime International, yesterday welcomed 180 delegates from 52 countries to the Malta Colloquium on a Draft International Instrument on the Recognition of Judicial sales.
This colloquium held on the suggestion of UNCITRAL was co-sponsored by the Ministry for Transport, the Comite Maritime International (CMI) and the Malta Maritime law Association.
The CMI which is responsible for having drafted the majority of international maritime conventions had replied to the evident need for an international convention on the international recognition of judicial sales by working on a draft convention and had last year asked UNCITRAL to include the project in its work Programme. UNCITRAL is currently actively considering this proposal and had through a Note Verbal informed all Ambassadors accredited to the United Nations of the holding of this colloquium.
The Colloquium was addressed by Minister Ian Borg, the President of the CMI Mr. Stuart Hetherington, as well as Mr. Ryan Harrington Legal Counsel of UNCITRAL, and experts from Brazil, the United States, Australia, Switzerland, Honduras, Malta, Germany, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Belgium.
It is expected that the Colloquium will be followed by a report to UNCITRAL with the deliberations and conclusions of the Colloquium.
Minister Ian Borg underlined Malta’s commitment to the project. The Malta Maritime Law Association was very proud and privileged to be entrusted with the organisation of this high level event.
