Fenech & Fenech On board with the Industry: Part 2

26.8.24

Continuing our commitment to understanding our clients’ operations, Fenech and Fenech Advocates recently visited Malta Freeport Terminal Ltd, a key client and industry leader with whom our firm has enjoyed a long-standing relationship. This visit is part of our ongoing program to engage with clients on-site, ensuring that our legal expertise works hand in glove with the practical realities of our clients’ daily operations.

On August 21st, members of our Marine and Local Litigation, Ship Registration and Ship Finance Teams were welcomed at the offices of Malta Freeport Terminal Ltd by CEO Alex Montebello, CFO Jason Montebello, COO Fernando Querol, Finance Manager Adrian Cachia and Manager CEO Office Svetlana Gauci.

Mr Montebello provided a most informative presentation covering the impressive history and development of Malta Freeport Terminals Ltd. Mr Montebello highlighted Malta Freeport’s continuous efforts to invest in a greener future through various initiatives, including the regular arrival of LNG-powered containerships and the development of an onshore power supply (OPS), among other sustainable projects. These efforts and their dedication to excellence are evident in Malta Freeport Terminal Ltd’s status as the Mediterranean Transhipment Hub for globally renowned carriers and the significant traffic volumes handled over the years. Ann Fenech, head of our Marine Litigation department, expressed our gratitude to Mr Montebello, reflecting our appreciation for the ongoing collaboration and shared commitment to excellence.

Our visit continued with a tour of the Operations Control Centre, where Head of Operations Mr Adrian Mallia provided us with a deeper understanding of the complex logistics that underpin Malta Freeport’s success. We then proceeded to Terminal Two North Quay to observe the ongoing works related to the Squaring Off project. Once completed, this project will enable the terminal to continue to provide better for the latest class of 24,000 TEU vessels with a length of over 400 meters. The terminal’s capacity is expected to increase from 3.6 million TEUs to 4 million container movements per year, reinforcing Malta’s position as a major hub for global shipping activities.

We are grateful to the Malta Freeport team for their warm welcome and for providing us with the opportunity to witness their operations first-hand.
