Last week, Ann Fenech, Head of our Marine Litigation Department, attended Legal Committee 112 at the IMO in her capacity as President of the CMI.
The committee had numerous important matters on its agenda. It adopted the Guidelines on the fair treatment of seafarers detained on suspicion of committing crimes; it decided to work on the development of guidelines/best practices in ship registration and conduct a regulatory scoping exercise to strengthen IMO’s regulatory framework’s application to substandard ships and decided to examine how suitable the current civil liability regime is to deal with damages resulting from alternative fuels.
Dr. Fenech updated the committee on the progress made in the signing of the Convention on the International Effects of Judicial Sales of Ships since the 110th Legal Committee last year and thanked all those delegations who actively worked on getting their countries to sign the convention.
