Registration under the Malta flag following BREXIT
Until last year, Maltese law provided for the possibility of registering a vessel under the Malta flag in the ownership of a non-Maltese individual provided the said individual held a valid EEA, EU or Swiss passport. Following Brexit, the law has been amended to include citizens of the United Kingdom. A citizen of the United Kingdom may therefore apply to register a vessel under the Malta flag whether or not the said citizen is residing in Malta.
This amendment to Maltese law is of importance in particular to UK citizens who already make use of the Malta flag or who would like to reflag to a European flag and would have otherwise been unable to register under the Malta flag following Brexit.
