Marine Litigation/News/Videos
Managing partner Ann Fenech was interviewed by Newsbook on Saturday regarding the saga on board the MV Marina last week. This case highlights the plight of merchant shipping when vessels are the first responders to search and rescue operations saving lives at sea. Following the successful rescue of 79 Bangladeshi migrants south of Lampedusa on Sunday 3rd May, the vessel’s 13 crew members were thrown in the deep end having to take care of all these traumatised persons, posing very serious provisioning and security challenges for 6 days whilst Malta and Italy battled out who was going to allow the disembarkation of the migrants. The migrants were finally disembarked 6 days later on Saturday morning at Porto Empedocle in Sicily.
